Umberkhind |
The battle of Umberkhind was
fought on 3 February 1661. It was fought by Shivaji against Kartalab Khan (who was from Uzbekistan) who was sent by Shaista Khan to capture Konkon. As Shaista Khan was defeatad by Shivaji at the Battle of Chakan so he sent Kartalab to defeat Shivaji because he was an expert in war strategies. Kartalab was planing a suprise attack on Shivaji from a route through Lonawala to attack on Konkon of Panvel. But Shivaji got this information through his spies and pretended them as to be near Panvel. Shivaji knew that Kartalab would change his Route and actually that happened Karatalb changed his route. He planned the new route from Taleigao to Malauli and from Malauli to Kandhar jungles and after Kandhar jungles through Kurvanda Ghats. Shivaji got this information by his spies. From Kurvanda Ghats there is a village which is 3 miles far away from Kurvanda Ghats, from that place onward the Ghat is so narrow that the Mughal army have to walk in a line, this place is called Umberkhind.

Kartlab begging in front of Shivaji for his life |
The date was 3 February 1661 Shivaji took an army of 1,000 Maratha soldiers with him to Umberkhind, against Kartalab who had an army of 30,000 Mughal soldiers. At afternoon Shivaji with his army reached Umberkhind and settled his soldiers at the place from where they could easily attack the Mughal forces. After sometime Kartalab reached Umberkhind, as he was crossing the Ghat till the mid way it was all fine but at the mid way of Umberkhind the cannons were being fired on the Mughals and the arrows began to rain on them. The Mughals thought that the death is coming for them they thought that they should run backwards but the Marathas had blocked their way from the back. Which resulted in a total Mughal defeat, Kartalab had no option other than asking Shivaji for mercy and begging him for his life. Kartalb surrendered and signed a treaty with Shivaji that he will never come back and would never do this again. Shivaji then leaved him and gave Kartalab's life to him. From that point onward Kartalab never came back to attack Shivaji.
